Feeding

So i wanted some advice from current mommys... Halle is approaching her 3 week mark and i am having lots of pain still while breastfeeding. EVERYTHING i read in books and online about breastfeeding says it should not hurt, and the only reason it would hurt is because of improper latch on. However, i have watched many videos, read in my books and online, talked to many people and studied it a lot and i feel like we (me and Halle) are doing everything mentioned for proper latch on!! But it is still so painful. Very frustrating... i'm thinking about going to a lactation specialist to try and figure out what i'm doing wrong. Is this just part of feeding and i need to just wait it out? or is it really preventable like all the experts say? I want to call up these experts and ask if any of them have ever actually breastfed?? :) Advice please!!!

Ya it hurts, kills for a while. I would suggest to go to a lactation specialist. It can be akward but they can actually see how you both are nursing and should be able to help. It gets better and just remember that nursing is free (formula is EXPENSIVE)and it will help you lose the baby weight. It can be inconvenient but I thought it was worth it (so many benefits).

I remember it hurting SO bad with Ethan for a long time. I would just cry and cry while feeding him because the pain was so bad. I really think I must have had a clogged milk duct or something because after a while it went away. If it seems like Halle has a mouth full when she's feeding then it's probably not her latch on that's the problem. You might have a clogged duct or something and trust me, it can be sooooo painful as you probably are experiencing. Research the signs for it or mastisis (sp?) and see if that could be your problem.. good luck!

I would definatly try a lactation specialist but do know there are cerrtiain conditions that cause pain. My sister in law has milk duct spasms to where she would be crying when nursing it hurt so bad. They told her each time she had a new baby that the baby just must not be latching but finally on the 4th child a lactation specialist labled it as milk duct spasms. So yes, you can be doing everything right and still have pain with some conditions. But you could also just be ultra sensitive too? good luck ashley, sorry you are having some pain. have you tried a using a pump? does that hurt? becuase pumps latch on right every time so maybe try pumping for a few days and giving it thru bottles and see if that gives you some relief?

Ohh the joy of nursing! I went to a lactation specialist and it was nice to know that I REALLY was doing everything right. But if you think you have a good latch it probably is just fine. Still it doesnt hurt to go to one and see if everything looks good. Also there is a FREE Leche League group in Provo that I went and saw and they are nice and supportive also. But really you just have to create callouses. I have read SOOO many things on nursing and they always say that nursing shouldn't hurt but really if you think about it, it does have to hurt a little since you aren't used to a baby sucking every two to three hours!!! Anyways let me know if you want the phone numbers for the ones that I went to. Hang in there though, trust me it will ALL get better. At least you aren't cracked !

I agree with you...sometimes I want to ask the specialists if they've even had a baby and been through it b/c it hurts! The first time Porter tried to latch on it hurt and the lady said I was doing it wrong from day one...but look at him now...7 months and 20+ lbs so I must have been doing something right. I say keep with it. Formula is expensive and nursing babies smell so much better too! I just had to tell myself every time..."How selfish are you willing to be? This is for your own flesh and blood!" I wanna say it didn't start getting better until he was about 7 weeks old. Good Luck! Keep in touch!

I agree with everyone else about seeing a lactation specialist. One helped me in the hospital alot after I had Bryson cause he had so much trouble latching on and I couldn't have done it without her! But even with my second and third, they started latching right away and it still would kill for like a week cause I think your body just has to get used to it! Try to stick with it girl, it's so worth it in the end! They are so much healthier and it saves you tons of money!

Ok, Ashley... I had this same problem. Everyone told me it really should not hurt, but mine seriously did for about a month to 5 weeks. Keep on going even though it is the worst pain EVER, because it is worth it when it eases. My other 2 had latching problems and simply would come off the breast ALL the time. So if you hear her swallowing and she is staying on... then you probably have it right. Keep Going girl. Your baby is gorg!!
